Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company and it is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario.

Shopify offers online retailers a variety of e-commerce tools to simplify the process of running an online store:  payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools.  These are ll ideal for small merchants to run their online store.  Shopify has become one of the most popular tools available to build your own online store.

Shopify is a web application and it allow the user to create his own online store.  You can choose from a huge array of templates to design your store with the look and feel that you want.  It also offers an advanced feature where it allows people who are knowledgeable to edit the HTML and the CSS.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lutke, Scott Lake and Daniel Weinand.  They previously owned and online store with Snowboarding equipment called Snowdevil.  They were highly dissatisfied with the existing e-commerce products on the market and this inspired them to develop Shopify.

Below I am posting a Shopify for Beginners Video.  It is an interesting video so I wanted to share!

Reviews From Shopify Customers

During my research, I came across a mix of varying reviews from Shopify customers.  I would read though these before making any type of a decision.  After looking through the reviews, I don’t think I would be inclined to buy from a Shopify powered store just because of the uncertainty it gives me from all of the bad customer reviews.

  1. Shopify is a great website for retailers who carry a lot of products. They have gone through a lot of feature upgrades that are beneficial for online stores. Yes, they are more expensive than the others but I do find their service to be tip-top. If you only have a handful of products and not making a lot of profit yet, this may be a bit of a high-end platform to use.

    • Cathy,

It sounds like you have some experience with Shopify.

I also agree that Shopify as some really great features and functionality to offer!

Best wishes to you and thank you for your comment!

  2. Thanks for this review of the Shopify system.

I’m also interested in joining Shopify to create my own store with them, but the thing that holds me is, I’m afraid of the costs. In what I can see, there’s no free option to join them. The lowest cost is $29 per month, of course, that’s okay if you’re making sales and profits, but what if there are months that you’re not making money, are you obligated to pay them an ongoing fee of $29 per month?

But anyway, in the business world, that’s part of the game. You have to pay rent for the owner of the building you’re occupying whether you make sales or not. So, I guess I’d just accept that. But still, that bothers me.

    • Gomer,

That is a good point!  Yes, you do have to pay the monthly fee to Shopify every month.  You have to pay it even if your store does not turn a profit.  That is a downside because if you decide to stop paying it, you will lose all of the work that you have put into it.

  3. Hi Alisha,

My wife has a Shopify website and so I could very much relate to virtually everything you say in your post.

The statistics you shared on the volume of sales done via these Shopify websites is remarkable, and it is only going to continue. I’m based in the UK and there’s hardly any month or so that we don’t hear about the demise of high street shops because customers are switching most of their shopping away from high street to online.

For all their imperfections, the trend in online shopping is only going to serve Shopify more.

All in all, thank you for an informative piece.

    Kind regards

    • That is great to hear that you can relate with my article.  And, that is very cool that your wife has a shop.  What does she sell?

I do believe that Shopify is a good platform although some of the customer reviews did concern me.  Have your wife’s customer’s been satisfied?

  4. Hi Alisha, this is a very good review of Shopify.  On the outside, it certainly looks like a valuable and credible business.  In fact, before I joined Wealthy Affiliate I tinkered with Shopify, however, the money I would have had to spend monthly ended up being too much for me to commit too.

I really like the shopper reviews you posted here.  I think they speak for themselves.  And, the way you worked your Wealthy Affiliate experience into the post was spot on.

    Great job!

    • Calvin,

I am glad that you found my article to be useful.

In the past, I experimented with a Shopify store.  I did not have any success because the ship[ping of my own products became too much to handle.

After that, I decided to pursue Affiliate Marketing so I can make a commission promoting other people’s products and never have to handle the products.  That is when I started my training and built my websites at Wealthy Affiliate.

I am so thankful that I did!

Thank you for your positive feedback!

  5. Hi Alisha

Very interesting reading the reviews from customers of Shopify, seems that there are a lot of people complaining that they are not receiving their goods from some of the online stores. While I appreciate that Shopify cannot control unscrupulous sellers not supplying the good that were promised, it would seem to be in their best interest to perhaps police the site better and get the dodgy operators off.

It seems like a good platform if you are an honest businessperson just try to sell or dropship your product.

    Thanks for the article.

    • Dominic,

I do agree with you that Shopify needs a better way to police the system.  It is very sad that some Shopify store owners do not follow through for their customers.

I do also believe it is a good platform if you have your own products to sell.

      Thank you for your comment!
